MVHS Pre-IB Courses
-
MV honors students take 8 classes each year. Typically, they take 4 classes first semester and another 4 classes second semester (4×4 block schedule). Some classes may run year-long and will be coupled with a second year-long course.
MV honors courses were not created by IB and are not regulated by IB. They are SCPS courses that have been specifically planned to prepare students for the rigors and assessments of the IB Diploma Program courses that follow them at Mountain View High School.
Six of the classes in a student’s schedule relate to IB Diploma Program preparation. Students have room in their schedules for 2 elective courses (unless they “double-up” – see bottom of page).

*Notes:
- The student’s placement in a world language level will depend on the level completed in 8th grade, if any.
- The student’s placement in a math level will depend on the level completed in 8th grade. All MV honors students must complete Algebra 1, Honors Geometry, and Honors Algebra 2 before 11th grade. Some students may also complete Math Analysis.
- Students who wish to take IB Art or IB Theatre must complete Art 1 and 2 or Drama 1 and 2 before entering 11th grade.
On “Doubling-Up”
Mountain View’s 4×4 block schedule allows students to complete 2 levels of a course within one academic year, if necessary, in order to complete all required courses by 11th grade. For example, many student “double-up” in world language or math by taking one level first semester and the next level second semester. This is not necessary for all students, but it is a nice option for students to have if they need it.The MVHS counselors are all IB-trained and very well-versed at setting students up for the correct sequence of courses in preparation for the IB Diploma Program.
