A Message from the Principal,

Welcome to my webpage. For those of you new to Moncure, I would like to take a moment to share a little about my background.  I have spent the first 23 years of my career with Stafford County Public Schools.  After relocating from Pittsburgh to Stafford County with my wife in 1997, we quickly became part of the community we now call home.  My wife is currently a first-grade teacher with Stafford County Public Schools and our three children have all attended Stafford County Schools (my oldest son is now a graduate of JMU, my daughter is a graduate of North Stafford High School and a freshman at Christopher Newport University, and my youngest son is currently a student at H.H. Poole Middle School).

The first chapter of my career began as a fifth-grade teacher at Hartwood Elementary School.  After 6 1/2 years, I was given the opportunity to serve as the assistant principal at Rocky Run Elementary for the following 3 1/2 half great years.  As we prepare for the 2020-21 school year, I am serving my fourteenth year as Moncure’s principal.  I am a teacher first!  With that being said, as a school administrator, I strongly believe in the importance of supporting individual student strengths and addressing specific challenges.  Each day, I look forward to helping children reach their dreams.  I love my job and especially enjoy witnessing similar enthusiasm from my students and staff.  I'm looking forward to an AMAZING school year!

Moncure opened our state-of-the-art building during the fall of 2019.  This year, we are home to approximately 850 students (spanning Kindergarten through Fifth grade). To meet the needs of our children, we have assembled a talented and diverse group of professionals to include classroom teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals, office staff, cafeteria workers, and custodians to make each day count.  Our talented specialists work with our students weekly to provide Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education. To provide additional support, Moncure houses an ESL support staff, two Reading Specialists, a Mathematics Specialist, an Intervention Specialist, a Technology Resource Teacher, a Focus Resource Teacher, and an amazing Title 1 staff.  Moncure’s motto, “Engage and Empower All Learners to Thrive,” reinforces our commitment to help ALL children maximize their potential.  As a community, we regularly do our best to meet children at their individual levels.  We also welcome collaboration through time, energy, and commitment of our parents and community.

While Covid has certainly altered our way, Moncure Elementary will return to our rich tradition of offering multiple clubs and activities for our children.  A few examples include Tutoring, Chorus, a Percussion Group, Art Club, Math Club, Running Club, SCA, WMES (our daily broadcast studio), our annual Spelling Bee, Science Clubs, STEM "Design Challenge Days", and many more.  We believe in the importance of keeping our school spirited and united.  To honor our Bear Mascot, we celebrate "Bear Season" each Fall and Spring.  We are proud of our community and students and have an amazing House System that supports this culture.  To learn more about our House System, I encourage you to keep reading.

Moncure kicked off our House System during the 2019-20 school year.  As a member of our school, students and staff members spin a wheel to determine his or her particular House.  Moncure has six houses.  While each house has a unique name, each name stands for a specific trait.  While we are all part of one “Bear Nation,” every House wants to be crowned “House of the Year.”  To do this, all students and staff are held to a list of standards and expectations that we refer to as our “Vital 40.”  When teachers observe students practicing our Vital 40, students received a “Pawsitive” Citation and one House point.  When students catch staff members following the Vital 40, staff members receive a “Caught Ya” Citation and one house point.  During a typical school year, we gather every four to five weeks for “House Celebrations.” During these events, we show support for our houses and recognize one student from each house for their exemplary Vital 40 act(s) that led to one or more “Pawsitive” Citations.  Each of these students are granted a supplementary opportunity to spin our wheel for additional house points.  Our student body absolutely loves cheering each other on during these events.  On the last day of our school year, we hold our final House Celebration.  During this occasion, we crown our “House of the Year” and “Bear of the Year.”  This is an amazing time of unity and support.  Both of these honors are displayed on gym banners.  We love our House System and look forward to seeing our “Vital 40” demonstrated throughout our school and community.

As a school, we are proud of our accomplishments and excited about our future.  Stafford County's commitment to Moncure is evident through our fabulous building.  I look forward to the many memories to be made with our students, community, and staff.  As a school, we are always striving to improve.  If you have any ideas you would like to share, we welcome your input.  Please stop by, we would love to hear from you.

Thanks for taking the time to learn about Moncure and myself. Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at machigr@staffordschools.net.

Sincerely,
