    December/January News

We had so much fun on our National Zoo field trip! It was also great to see students participating in lots of games and activities at Moncure's Fall Festival. We are moving into the home stretch of the second quarter already. Before we go on winter break, students will complete a few different mid-year assessments. Students are expected to show growth from the beginning of the year to now. When we come back from winter break, students will receive their second quarter report card.

December brings a focus on writing for third grade. We will spend the next few weeks practicing each step of the writing process. In math, we will be working on subtraction on a number line, multiplication fluency, and patterns. When we return from break, we will focus on place value and will start working with four and five digit numbers.

You can help your child at home by making sure they are reading at least 20 minutes every night as well as practicing 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 multiplication facts.

    November News

We enjoyed seeing the third grade families at Literacy Night and hope that you had a wonderful time!  Please continue to monitor your child's nightly reading.  Afterward, ask your child to tell you about what was read.  During November the children will be comparing the characters, settings, and plots of different versions of the same fiction stories.  They will also compare nonfiction and fiction books about similar topics.  Then, the children will learn to identify the theme or lesson of a fiction story.

In Math the children will be learning about fractions (focusing on one half and one fourth).  Then, students will estimate and measure length in inches and feet.  They will also continue to learn multiplication facts.  Practice at home with the 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 facts would be helpful.

We'll begin the month learning about adaptations that help animals survive in their ecosystems.  During our field trip to the National Zoo the students will be able to observe animals and identify those adaptations.  Please send in the permission slip and fee by November 6.  Third graders will learn about ancient Egypt in Social Studies during the rest of the month.

The Fun Run will be held on November 15.  We appreciate your support of this fundraiser!  Our classes will be running from 12:35 to 1:20.  You are welcome to come and cheer them on.  Also, interim reports will be sent home on November 15.

The third grade team would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!  We are thankful for our students and for your support.

    October News

The third grade team has enjoyed getting to know the children!  They have worked hard to learn our routines and procedures.  Now we are busy learning our curriculum.  We look forward to meeting with you at conferences the week of October 14.  Scheduling information will be sent home soon.

We have planned a field trip to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. for Wednesday, November 13.  The permission slip will be sent home around mid October.  Chaperones will have the opportunity to sign up on the permission slip. The cost will be $16.50 for each student and each parent chaperone.  Chaperones should not pay for themselves until they hear from the teachers.

Third graders should be reading at home for at least 25 minutes.  We are looking forward to a wonderful school year.  Thank you for your help and support at home.
