Miss Alison McMillan
Alison McMillan is in her 6th year teaching and has happily spent the beginning of her career at Widewater. Miss McMillan is an only child who grew up in Fairfax, VA and went to school in Fredericksburg at the University of Mary Washington. While there, she earned her B.A. in English and her M.S. in Elementary Education with a specialization of incorporating Arts into instruction. Her graduate research was on the benefits of drawing pictures in retaining information, which she completed while student teaching in a first grade classroom in Spotsylvania County.
Miss McMillan’s favorite part about teaching is getting to see the growth students make, not just academically, but as caring and responsible citizens of their classroom, school, and town. Those “lightbulb” moments, when a student really grasps a concept for the first time, are wonderful and exciting to see as well. One of her favorite quotes comes from Brad Henry and is as follows, “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” Miss McMillan is also especially fond of children’s literature. Her favorite authors include Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl.
