    The goal of History and Social Science instruction is to prepare students for informed and responsible citizenship. To this end there are three required courses: Grade 9 World History to 1500 A.D., Grade 11 Virginia and United States History, and Grade 12 Virginia and United States Government. To receive an Advanced Studies Diploma, students must also complete Grade 10 World History from 500 A.D. to the Present. Electives and Advanced Placement courses are available.

    Student Placement Criteria


     

    Parents and teachers will partner together to identify appropriate history and social science courses for students. High school students who accelerate through the appropriate middle and high school courses may be eligible to earn college credit in high school by enrolling in Advanced Placement World History I and II, Advanced Placement United States History, or Advanced Placement US Government.

    Middle School - 

    In addition to the standards, curriculum frameworks, enhanced scope and sequence guides, test blueprints and released tests, other middle school instructional resources include:

    • Economics and Financial Literacy – instructional resources to assist in meeting the requirements economics education and financial literacy requirements for all middle and high school students
    • North American Map of Selected Geographic Regions (2001) (PDF) – correlates to Standard USI.2b

    • Virginia's First People Past and Present – guide for teaching the history, geography and economic systems of Virginia Indians, both past and present, with links to Virginia's eleven state-recognized tribes

    Parent Involvement


     

    Parents are vital members of the instructional team for History and Social Science. The teachers provide a syllabus and course cards are available online to inform parents each fall. For additional information, contact Social Studies Lead Teachers at each individual school.

    Student Achievement Trends
