Welcome to Mrs. Szymanski's First Grade Farm!

I am originally from Napa,  California.  I attended Bethany College in Santa Cruz and UC East Bay.   I taught first grade for several years,  then substitute taught often as a long term teacher in many grades. After getting married to Richard Szymanski, we settled down in the Sacramento area to raise our two children    I substitute taught and was very involved in volunteering in my children's  classrooms so I could support  my daughter's  love of performing arts and my son's artistic ambitions. They are now grown. Our son lives in CA and works as a Story Board Artist.  His current job is with Nickelodian.  He also has credits with DreamWorks. T.V.  Our daughter  and son-in-law have blessed us with two adorable  grandaughters.

We moved from California to VA six years ago.  I kept up my love of education by taking continuing education classes and was known by several schools as a fun-loving, interactive, hands-on substitute  teacher.  I look a job as a long-term librarian at PRES and loved the school.  Everyone was friendly and supportive of each other.   When a job became available in the first grade,  I accepted the postion.  This will be my fourth year at PRES.

Piaget said about the goal of learning, "The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create (individuals)  who are capable of doing new things."  How can my students use this knowledge in the real world?    I use drama, music, puppets, games, art, technology as vehicles  to teach concepts. Students learn not just hearing from me but by talking to each other in many types of small groups.

You can connect with me at szymanskile@staffordschools.net or call me at  540-658-6320 and leave a message at the office and I will call you back. I also use Class Dojo which is an easy way to contact me and I you when we get the class up and connected.
