The RTMS Green Team is a club that focuses on recycling and reusing in an effort to make our school and community “greener.” During the 2020-2021 school year, we will be providing ideas for activities that can be done at home. See below for some of our past projects and find out more about the TREX plastic recycling program that we will continue throughout the year.
TREX program-RTMS is competing in a plastic bag collection competition! Bring your bags to school so they can be collected, submitted and used to make outdoor products by the TREX company.
What can you do from home?
What is compost? It is decayed organic material used as a plant fertilizer.
You can start composting at home--it's easy! Check out this easy guide to get started.
What is upcycling? It is reusing (discarded objects of material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.
This is super easy to do. Find something that you don't need anymore and find a way to make something new out of it. Check this page out to get started.
The local landfill collects:
- paper products (if you can tear it you can bring it)
- plastic food and water containers labeled #1 through 7
- clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars
- soda, soup and other cans
- NEW – food and beverage cartons (soup and juice boxes, milk and juice cartons)
Please rinse food and beverage containers out before placing them in your recycling bin. Place loose items in the recycling bin; don’t bag them.Grow-Plant an indoor herb garden--check out some ideas!Past activities
The Green Team made some great items that were upcycled from items that would have otherwise thrown in our local landfill. Check it out... Can you find what used to be a skirt, jeans, PJs and fabric scraps?
