  • Welcome

    Dear Early Childhood families,

Welcome!  Due to the recent closures of Va. schools, we will together embark on a new journey to support your child and family. You will find a wealth of learning activities/recommendations on the "Newsletters" and "Resources" pages on this web page. I hope that you will find these to be valuable resources. These resources will address such developmental skills as: Cognition, Language, Social and Emotional, Self Help, and Fine and Gross Motor. They will encourage active explorations, problem solving, social engagement and communications, and self concept and responsibility. These resources are based upon the following guiding principles:

    • Children learn best through active involvement with people, materials, events, and ideas.
    • Consistent adult support and respect for children's choices, thoughts, and actions strengthen a child's self-esteem, feelings of responsibility, self-control, and knowledge.
    • Children learn best when immersed in a positive, consistent, and predictable routine.
    • Children greatly benefit from a language enriched environment.

On Mondays, for the remainder of this school year, activities/recommendations will be updated for a two week period. The activities are enrichment ideas for you to modify in your home environment if you so choose. Please note, however, that simply setting time aside to engage in play activities, while being present, to talk and be with your child is time well spent! .

In addition to our web page, I have created a class page at "ClassDojo" (www.classdojo) to allow ease in communications between myself, Ms. Lori, and families. You have been emailed an invite on Monday March 30th, which you will need to accept to access the site. Once you have accepted the invite, you will be directed to sign in as a "student" and each of the children's names have already been added into a "class" in Class Dojo. Be looking for messages and photos/videos for your children. I look forward to "visiting" with them weekly.

I have also emailed you all information regarding Epic (www.getEpic.com) online literacy. By joining (currently free) Epic, your child will gain instant access to a wealth of books, read alouds, and games for children ages 12 and under. You should have received an email on Friday 3/27 with information regarding our class code, which you will need to find your child's account.

Please be sure to check in and contact me with any suggestions, questions, and/or concerns you may have as we learn how to navigate this new norm together. My cell is 540-538-3055. I look forward to supporting your child/family to the best of my ability (keeping in mind, please, that this is a learning curve for me as well!). Ms. Lori and I miss the children dearly. Please stay happy, healthy, and safe!

Thank you, Laura Szymendera, ECSE (lszymendera@staffordschools.net)
