• Welcome to the Early Childhood Special Education program for Two Year olds at North Star Early Childhood Education Center. The program strives for a warm, welcoming, language-enriched environment in which all children have fun and learn. Daily instruction and activities encourage explorations, problem solving, social communication, and responsibility. Our curriculum addresses such developmental skills as: Cognition, Language, Social and Emotional, Self Help, and Fine and Gross Motor. The guiding principles for our classroom program include:

    • Children learn best through active involvement with people, materials, events, and ideas.
    • Consistent adult support and respect for children's choices, thoughts, and actions strengthen a child's self-esteem, feelings of responsibility, self-control, and knowledge.
    • Children learn best when immersed in a positive, consistent, and predicatble routine.
    • Children greatly benefit from a language enriched environment.

    About the Early Childhood Special Education staff:

     Laura Szymendera, Early Childhood Special educator:

    I come from a family of four generations of teachers. I have been teaching for 30 years and the past 20 years have been teaching Early Childhood Special Education for Stafford County Public Schools.

    I married my high school sweetheart and we have been married for 35 years. We have 2 adult daughters and two grandchildren. WE have lived in PA, NY, the United Kingdom, and VA.My favorite place I have lived was in Southern England.

    Lori Montemayor, Early Childhood Special Education paraprofessional:

    I also have parents that were teachers and I have a daughter who teaches preschool in Arlington, VA. I was originally trained as a rehabilitation counselor, but I have been working in the Early Childhood classrooms throughout Stafford County for the past 20 years. I have 3 adult adult children and have been married to a Marine for 32 years. I also have a 15 year old black lab names Smokey!

    We are so very excited for the opportunity to play and learn with your child. We look forward to working with your family as well. It's going to be a great year full of positive growth and fun!
