Introduction
What is Virtual Virginia?
As a program of the Virginia Department of Education, Virtual Virginia (VVA) offers online Advanced Placement (AP), world language, core academic, and elective courses to students throughout the state of Virginia. More information can be found on the Virtual Virginia website.
What makes a successful online student?

How large are the Virtual Virginia classes?
Virtual Virginia follows the Virginia Standards of Quality for class sizes.
If a student is not successful virtually, will they be required to return to in person learning?
The decision to return a student to face to face instruction will be up to the student, their parents, the School Mentor, the Guidance Counselor, as well as other applicable support staff.
How will information be distributed to families of virtual students about school system happenings?
Virtual Virginia students and their families will continue to receive communication from their home school and the division through phone calls and emails.

Instruction
Will my child have an SCPS teacher?
No. Virtual Virginia provides their own licensed teachers.
What are the hours for Virtual Virginia courses?

Will Virtual Virginia have the same course options as SCPS?
No. While Virtual Virginia does have a variety of course offerings, students choosing to enroll in Virtual Virginia may find they need to make other selections in elective areas. Students will be able to take general education courses in English, math, science, history, and social studies, world languages, art, music, physical education, and computer science. Students are also able to take a variety of Advanced Placement courses.
Where can I find the course offerings for Virtual Virginia?

Can students enrolled in Virtual Virginia participate in school sports, clubs, and activities?
Yes. Students enrolled in Virtual Virginia will be able to participate in extracurricular athletics and activities at their home school.
Can my child still participate in chorus, theater, band or CTE?
Virtual Virginia does not offer these options for fully virtual students.
Will my child follow the same calendar as the face-to-face students?
No. The calendar for Virtual Virginia is slightly different from the SCPS calendar. The Virtual Virginia calendar can be found on the Academic Calendar page of the VVA site.
Will students be able to work at their own pace?
No. Students enrolled in Virtual Virginia courses will follow the daily schedule provided by the Virtual Virginia calendar. Students will also participate in daily synchronous instruction with Virtual Virginia teachers.
What does a synchronous session look like in Virtual Virginia?
VVA secondary teachers provide daily synchronous instruction to students. Synchronous sessions are recorded for any students unable to attend, and recordings are posted in the Virtual Virginia courses. All students are responsible for the content presented during the synchronous sessions. More information about synchronous instruction can be found on the Secondary Synchronous Instruction VVA page.

Who will provide required textbooks and materials?
Textbooks and materials will be provided by the home school.
How do Virtual Virginia students participate in SOL testing?
Students will participate in Standards of Learning testing in person at their home school.

Services and Accommodations
Does Virtual Virginia provide special education services?
If your child has an IEP, 504, or is in the evaluation process your child’s IEP or 504 teams will convene to discuss what services and accommodations will look like if you chose the virtual option. Special education services will be provided outside of the virtual schedule and therefore may be reduced to an appropriate amount for your child to access instruction.
If my child has a 504 plan, how will he/she receive services and accommodations?

If my child is identified as a gifted learner, how will he/she receive services and accommodations?
Gifted services will not be provided by K-12/Stride; therefore, SCPS gifted services will be very limited. Identification will take place face to face in the school.
If my child has an ESL plan, how will he/she receive services and accommodations?
EL services will not be provided by K-12/Stride; therefore, SCPS services will be limited to scheduled sessions with an SCPS ESOL specialist to address language acquisition needs in relation to the content material.

Technology/Internet
Will SCPS issue my child a Chromebook or hotspot if needed?
Yes. These can be requested from your child's home school.
Where can I receive technical support?
Virtual Virginia provides a VVA Tech Support Help Desk for any issues related to courses and the platform. For SCPS-related tech issues, SCPS staff is available to assist.

Enrollment
If a student enrolls in Virtual Virginia as a full time virtual student are they still considered an SCPS student?
Yes. A student who enrolls full time in Virtual Virginia will be concurrently enrolled in their SCPS home school and will have access to extracurricular programs, athletics, and activities.
How do I enroll my student as a full time Virtual Virginia student for the 2021-2022 school year?
Fill out the registration form on the SCPS website. Registration will be open from May 27th through June 8th.
Do I need to pay anything extra for my child to enroll in Virtual Virginia?
No. SCPS will absorb all costs associated with enrollment in Virtual Virginia.
Do students need to be enrolled full time in Virtual Virginia?
Yes. Fully virtual students must be enrolled full time in Virtual Virginia.
Once my child is enrolled in Virtual Virginia, do they need to remain enrolled for the entire school year?
A student's choice to remain virtual should ideally be for the entire school year. In the event that it becomes in the student's best interest to come back to face to face instruction, every effort will be made to do this at a term change.
If my child is home-schooled, can they participate in Virtual Virginia?
If the child resides in Stafford County, they may enroll in SCPS and participate in Virtual Virginia.
If my child is enrolled in Virtual Virginia, will they also be enrolled in their home school?
Yes. All Virtual Virginia students will be concurrently enrolled in their SCPS home school.
