Below is information regarding scientifically proven therapies and resources for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Treatment for autism can be very intensive and comprehensive and can involves the child's entire family and a team of professionals. Some programs may take place in your home or at an outside agnecy, and are sometimes covered by your insurance company. Below are a list of therapies that your child may be eligable for outside of or in addition to therapys conducted at school. *Just because your child is eligable for a therapy outside of school, does not necessarily mean that they will qualify for one inside of school.
1. Speech Language Therapy (Speech)- work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders
2. Occupational Therapy (OT)-Focuses on helping people with a physical, sensory or cognitive disability be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives.
3. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)-The use of scientifically based techniques and principals to bring about meaningful and positive change in behavior.
4. Physical Therapy (PT)- is focused on any problems with movement that cause functional limitations. Children with autism frequently have challenges with motor skills such as sitting, walking, running or jumping. PT can address poor muscle tone, balance and coordination.
PECS- PECS was developed in 1985 as a unique augmentative/alternative communication intervention package for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental disabilities.PECS begins by teaching an individual to give a picture of a desired item to a “communicative partner", who immediately honors the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences. In the more advanced phases, individuals are taught to answer questions and to comment.
