Mathematics
The Stafford County Public Schools' Mathematics curriculum is designed to achieve a balance among concepts, skills, and problem solving. The curriculum stresses rigorous concept development, presents realistic and relevant tasks, while maintaining a strong emphasis on computational and procedural skills. Kindergarten through Advanced Mathematics, the curriculum encourages students to reason mathematically, to evaluate mathematical arguments both formally and informally, and to use the language of mathematics to communicate ideas and information precisely. Our teachers use the Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics to ensure students are able to make connections among mathematical topics and to other disciplines.
Stafford County Public Schools strives to incorporate the five Mathematical Process Standards into our instruction everyday:
By implementing the Mathematics Process Standards, teachers are assisting students with developing skills to become an ALL Century Learner, C5W
- Problem Solving - Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems
- Reasoning/Proof – Seeing and establishing relationships among ideas and facts
- Communication – Share mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others
- Connection – Recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics
- Representation – Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas
