Hello students and families!
Welcome to Third Grade! I am so excited to have you in my class! This year you will be reading awesome books, tackling problem solving challenges, and using Chromebooks to participate in Blended Learning. This is also the first year you wil take the SOL tests! I am looking forward to meeting you all at Back to School Night!
We will also be using Google Classroom as part of our Blended Learning and class collaboration. We won't be using these digital tools until after we have studied the importance of Digital Citizenship.
Please check my webpage throughout the year for newsletters, announcements, and classroom news.

Wow! Our class remains in 1st place! We have raised $1,160 and are just $40 away from our goal! Thank you to everyone that has registered, donated, and asked others for help to support great programs at our school!
We have earned the following incentives for next week:
PJ Day- Monday, March 12th
Extra recess- Wednesday, March 14th
Movie and Popcorn- TBD
Field Trip on Tuesday, March 13th
Please make sure your child is at school on time. We will leave by 9:15. If possible please have your child eat breakfast at home.
Please pack a plastic water bottle, bagged lunch, and one or two snacks. We will be gone from 9:15 until almost the end of the day. The snacks must be nut free since we are sharing the buses with other classes and will have snack on the bus.
Please have your child wear Grafton gear or the color blue.
Please do not send your child with money. They will not be allowed to visit the gift shop or the concessions.
Please remind your child of the expectations for their behavior. We will be at a busy place and need to be safe. The students are expected to be respectful and good listeners!
Our class has earned a crazy sock and no shoes day for reaching 10% of our Leprechaun Leap Fun Run goal! Wear a pair of fun socks and we’ll show them off in the classroom on Thursday, March 8th.
We have reached 25% of our classroom goal for Leprechaun Leap Fun Run! We will celebrate with a hat day on Friday, March 9th.
Field Trip: We will be visiting the Science Museum of Virginia on March 13th. Your child will need to return a signed permission slip and $36.00 by March 12th. We will eat lunch there so plan to send a bagged lunch, disposable drink and snacks. We will be taking 2 chaperones per class. If you are not selected as a chaperone you are welcome to meet us there at 10:30 and pay regular admission at the door. Please be aware you may not be able to attend the classroom science experiment session but will be able to tag along for everything else. http://www.smv.org/
Mrs. Swank recently visited and highly recommends the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. They have a special exhibit from Ancient China: Terracotta Army Legacy of the First Emperor of China on display until March 11th. It is an amazing display of life-sized artifacts from over 2,000 years ago. There is also a special exhibit called The Horse in Ancient Greece Art. Both of these exhibits are perfect supplements to our studies on Ancient Civilizations. The museum also has many artifacts from Egypt, China, Mali, Greece and Rome on display on a regular basis including a sarcophagus (coffin) of a mummy! There is an interactive zone for kids where they can create their own art. Check it out if you can! www.vmfa.museum
Fundraiser: March 16th is our Leprechaun Dash Fun Run. This year, the PTA is running the fundraiser this year so that all of the profits go directly to our school. Our class goal is to raise $1200. We have already raised $125 over the first day! Thank you for supporting the fundraiser so we can purchase new technology and equipment for our school!
Thank you for helping your child memorize our class's speaking part for the 3rd grade program.
The students have been learning how to be good citizens in their community.
To honor veterans and serve the community, they are collecting items to donate to local veterans and their families.
A letter went home Monday explaining the project. They will be collecting goods through next Thursday, November 9th. Donations can also be brought to the program at school next Thursday evening.
At this time, the Vietnam Veterans of America or VVA, is collecting clothes for all family members, jackets, shoes, housewares, toys, and books.
Items may be new or gently used.
They do not take food. If you would like to donate canned items, we can donate those to a local food shelter around Thanksgiving.
Thank you for your generosity and help teaching our kids to be great citizens!
This test will cover place value, rounding, and comparing numbers to the 100s.
Tomorrow is Back to School Night! I can't wait to meet my new 3rd grade Grizzlies. The 3rd grade session is 6:30-7:15. You may bring your supplies. Enjoy your last day of the summer!
