WELCOME TO THE HH POOLE LIBRARY!
My name is Mrs. Fleetwood and I am the librarian for HH Poole! I am beginning my 23rd year in education and my 12th year as a school librarian. My goal this year is for students to have fun in the library, and get our students to READ, READ, READ! Our theme this year is "READING IS OUR SUPER POWER"! Reading is connected to everything we do and books take you on wonderful journeys and teach us new and exciting facts. I am here for all students and encourage them to ask questions if they need help.
The library sponsors several reading programs throughout the year; Virginia Reader Choice for sixth graders, Cafe Book for seventh and eighth graders, and Battle of the Books, for all grades. More information will be forthcoming on each of these and will be discussed with students when they come to the library with their English Class.

Cafe Book at HH Poole
What is it? Cafe Book is a program for 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in reading and discussing new books. During the summer, the Cafe Book committee meets and selects 15-16 books, all published during the past year, to be considered by Cafe Book participants.
Who can join us? ANY 7th or 8th grade student who is interested in Cafe Book is welcome to join the group!
When does it meet? All Cafe Book meetings take place during 7th and 9th grade lunch times in the library. Students bring their lunches to the library during their designated lunch periods. A representative from the public library and the HHP librarian will talk about the sixteen (16) titles in the program. Students are given the opportunity to discuss the books they have read. -
What should I do? All students involved in Cafe Book agree to read at least three of the 15-16 books on the list although you are encouraged to read as many as possible. During the meeting, students will discuss books focusing on their strong and weak points.

Virginia Reader Choice Books
PURPOSE
To encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal, to broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure, to encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure, and to honor favorite books and their authors.
Who Can Participate?
Any 6th grader at HHPoole may participate in the Virginia Reader Choice book program we have here at school. The titles of the books were chosen over the summer by a committee of educators, librarians and parents.
Books will be introduced to the students in September and students are asked to read 4 out of the 6 books to participate in the VRC voting in April. Students must pass a 10 multiple choice question “quiz” to be qualified as reading the book. There will be a celebration/surprise in the Spring for those students who reach the goal.
A winner will be announced for each level- Primary, Elementary, Middle School, and High School. The winning book will have gathered the highest number of votes in their category. The deadline for voting for VRC books is April 30th. The winners will be announced after the voting window closes.

Battle of the Books
Reading competition
Overview
Battle of the Books is a reading program in all middle schools in Stafford County. All the students participating in the Stafford county Battle of the Books will read from the same list of 15 books, chosen by the librarians in the county. During the school year, each school will have games, activities and contests with the students to prepare them for the final competition. In January, each school will bring the final, competing team to a countywide competition. In this final competition, teams will participate in elimination rounds until only one school team remains as the countywide CHAMPION OF THE BOOKS!
Participants
Students in any grade can try out for the HH Poole Battle of the Books team. Students will hear about the program during a visit to the library in the fall and practices will begin in September.
The competition
The questions used for practice and the countywide Battle of the Books competition are very specific and will require students to remember many details about the books. The librarians have prepared 500 to 1000 questions for each book on the list so students will need to read carefully!
Final competition team
The final team representing HH Poole will be made up of students who are experts in books. Those students who would like to participate in the final competition representing HH Poole should strive to read as many books as possible. However, it is even more important to remember the details of the books you read, so pay close attention to characters and events as you are reading.
