Welcome to second grade and the 2019-2020 school year! We are a strong academic team of teachers who work collaboratively to challenge our highly creative second grade thinkers and learners. Our approach to learning is similar to Andy Warhol's, "I'm just so busy not working.... but busy playing because work is play when it's something you like." We are so excited to work with your children this year!
*"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world."
Dear Parents,You are cordially invited to be a partner in your child’s education.Ask your child what he or she is studying, and look in his or her agenda and homework folder/red folder every night. Red folders/homework folders are where you will find the newsletters and notes that are sent home as well as any homework that needs to be completed. We will also send home progress reports or make phone calls if we feel that your child is not progressing as expected.Ask Questions: If you have any concerns or are wondering why something is happening, please feel free to call or email us at any time. We welcome all concerns, ideas, and feedback that affect your child or our classroom. If something is not working, we are more than willing to talk.Homework: You should expect that your child will have some type of homework Monday - Thursday nights. You will always find the homework assignments written in the agenda, which will go home everyday. We encourage you to set up a scheduled time with your child to do homework everyday. Students should be able to do most assignments independently, but do help if it is necessary. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, please send a note or jot down a note to us on the assignment. We will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work.Birthdays: Please give us a heads up at least a day ahead of time if your child is planning to bring a treat for his or her birthday. Please send in goodies that are individually cut or packaged. We typically eat birthday treats in the cafeteria during lunch. Please check with your child's teacher to be sure there are no allergies in the class.Arrival Time: Students are to arrive at school after 8:35. Your child will be considered tardy after 9:00. All students will complete morning work during this time.Dismissal Time: Students are dismissed at 3:40. You are allowed to sign your child out at the front office until 3:00 for early dismissal.Specials/Schedule: Please check with your child's teacher about which day we are on in the specials rotation. Each second grade class has a different schedule. We are on a 6 day (A-F) rotation. Click on the "Class Schedules" to find the rotation schedule.
We understand that agendas are a new tool to 2nd graders. We will take time each day to copy homework assignments into them. Please take the time to check your child's agenda nightly. It is not only a great tool to help the students stay organized, but we also use it for communication purposes. We are trying to get the students in the habit of bringing his/her assignment book to the "adult in charge" of their house after school for a signature. (It is fine with us if a grandparent, babysitter, brother or sister over 16, aunt, uncle, etc. signs the assignment book.) We are also trying to get the students in the habit of bringing something for the "adult in charge" to sign the agenda (pen, pencil, marker, crayon.) We are not picky! Thank you for your support with this additional nightly task.
It will pay off in the long run! We promise!
As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child's teacher directly.Sincerely,The Second Grade TeamMrs. Connelly, Ms. Junker, Mrs. Swanson, Ms. Malack, Ms. Skinner, and Mrs. Broberg
