Prior to Spring Break and our social distancing, we had a busy March, as several Shirley Heim students traveled to the College of William and Mary to attend the Model United Nations Conference, where our students researched issues, delivered speeches and resolved conflicts through hard work and negotiation.
On March 4th, our top finalists in our school science fair traveled to the University of Virginia to compete in the Regional Science Fair. The students showed off their projects and completed a series of interviews with the regional judges. A special thank you to Mr. Kinger and Ms. Biggers for all of your support guidance.
Our Drama Club students did a stellar job performing SHMS’s performance of “The Sound of Music”. The students worked so hard all year and it paid off with their performance. Kudos to Ms. Irby for her time and commitment to our students.
Our Bingo Night Fundraiser was a huge success, thanks to all of our families coming together for the fun-filled event. It was our best turn-out yet.
We would especially like to thank all our donors for helping make Shirley Heim Bingo Night a success. Please support our Donors!

Spring is in the air as we prepare for warmer weather. March is National Reading Month and Shirley Heim Middle School encourages students to read, read, read! Students are participating in Battle of the Books, which is a reading program in all middle schools in Stafford County. All the students participating in the Battle of the Books will read from the same list of 15 books, chosen by the librarians in the county. Each school will bring the final, competing team to a countywide competition. Good luck SHMS.
We wish the best of luck to the Science Fair winners heading to UVA to represent Shirley Heim this month. We also wish continued success to our Boys Basketball team and Timberwolf Wrestling team.
Good luck to all of the students trying out for the Boys and Girls Track team and Girls Softball this spring. We cannot wait to cheer you on.
This year’s theater production is underway and our Drama students are hard at work rehearsing for “The Sound of Music”. Please stay tuned for dates and show times, coming this spring.
Our next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, March 4 at 7pm at Shirley Heim.

Despite a chilly January, we had a great month at Shirley Heim Middle School. We are thankful for our amazing teaching staff and administration, and our PTO provided a Soup and Chili dinner to show our appreciation. It was quite a spread. Thank you, families, for your contributions. We also had a fun-filled family spirit day at Cavalier Skating Rink. A fun time was had by all. Good luck to our new 2020 Boys Basketball team and Wresting team. We wish them success this season.
Shirley Heim hosted a Challenge Day (www.challengeday.org) and we were fortunate enough to provide this opportunity for a cross section of our 7th and 8th grade students. Teachers, counselors and adminitrators nominated 100 students who were invited to participate. The day was high energy and was emotional at times, dealing with issues faced by our youth today. With a focus on empathy, the only real weapon against bullying, students are able to share what they have learned with the rest of the student body. Students were chosen across all demographics and ethnicities. Athletes, academics, artists, and and students who are searching for their own wheelhouse. These students represented all the different subgroups within our building and created a day that will have a lifelong impact.
This year’s theater production is underway and our Drama students are hard at work rehearsing for “The Sound of Music”. Please stay tuned for dates and show times, coming this spring!
