STEM Program

  • What is STEM?

STEM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM Standards of Practice guide STEM instruction by defining the combination of behaviors, integrated with STEM content, which is expected of a proficient STEM student. These behaviors include engagement in inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st century workforce.

What will students learn? How will students learn?

Students will learn to apply content learned in science, technology, and mathematics courses to investigate the world around them and explore connections with non-STEM courses. The integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into non-STEM is an organic process. When real-world problems arise solutions are not found in content discipline isolation. Solutions to complex real-world problems are resolved by an interdisciplinary understanding of the issue. Therefore, students will engage in STEM activities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, English, art, music, social sciences, and more courses. STEM education flows throughout SCPS.
