Gifted Art is our gifted and talented art program for SCPS middle schools. It provides services for students in grades 6 - 8 that have been identified as gifted in the Visual Arts. I am currently the only Gifted Art resource teacher in the county and travel to all 8 of our middle schools to provide services for identified Gifted Art students.
The referral process starts with:
a student referral ( by teachers, parents, peers or the students themselves)
a portfolio of 5 specific art pieces
an art teacher assessment
a parent survey
a timed art assessment with the Gifted Art teacher.
These elements are rated and evaluated to see if a student qualifies for the Gifted Art program, which means that their needs would be better met by additional services in the visual arts.
Referrals can be made any time between August 1 and October 15 for the first semester, and between October 16 and January 31 for the second semester. Rating of portfolios occurs twice a year - November and March.
Students are pulled for services from their elective or P.E. periods approximately two times a month.
