6th Grade Newsletter
Welcome to the A.G. Wright Tiger Family!
We are thrilled to have you on board and are anxiously awaiting the first day of school! As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to provide you with essential information and important dates. Please read on for details on our Back-to-School Night, school hours, extracurricular activities, curriculum, cell phone policy, behavior matrix, locker parties, car pick-up procedure, and more:
Locker Parties:Wednesday, July 26th, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Thursday, July 27th, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Our locker parties are an opportunity for students to get a jump start on using and decorating their lockers. Don't worry if you can't make it; there will be plenty of time and assistance for your tiger to decorate and learn how to open their locker on the first day of school. Please read the attached flyer for additional information.Back-to-School Night: August 2nd from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
To ensure a manageable crowd and meaningful conversations with teachers and staff, we have designated specific times for families based on their last names:
Last names A-G: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Last names H-N: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Last names O-Z: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PMFirst Day of School for 6th Graders: August 8th from 9:20 AM to 3:50 PM
We have a fun-filled day planned where students will have the opportunity to meet all their teachers, learn to read their schedules, attend a pep rally, spend time at their lockers, and get to know their new school and each other before the 7th and 8th graders return.
School Hours:
School hours for the upcoming year are from 9:20 AM to 3:50 PM. Drop-off for students will begin at 8:50 AM and takes place in the FRONT of the building.
Fall Sports Try-Outs:
Field Hockey and Volleyball try-outs will take place from August 14th to August 16th after school. Your tiger must have an up-to-date (post-May 31st, 2023) VHSL physical on file to participate. We've attached a form for your convenience. Although it states it is for high school, the same form is used for middle school. Act early, as your tiger's doctor needs to complete a portion of the form. This is a state law, and no exceptions can be made.
Student Schedules:
We will reach out to you when your student's schedule is available in Parent and StudentVue.
Math and English Curriculum:
We are excited to announce that Stafford County Middle School has adopted a new math curriculum. In 6th grade, math classes will take place every day for 78 minutes, providing students with ample time and support. Based on careful analysis of each student's MAP scores, SOL scores, and teacher recommendations, all 6th graders will be placed in either Pre-Algebra 6 or Pre-Algebra Intensified, ensuring a personalized learning experience.
English classes will also take place every day for 78 minutes. In the first semester, students will engage with informative writing while reading "Bud, Not Buddy" and "Out of the Dust." During the second semester, they will explore argumentative writing by studying "Blood on the River" and "Written in Bone." These texts will enhance critical thinking skills and foster a love for reading and writing.
Behavior Matrix:
Safety is our number one priority. Please review the attached behavior matrix with your tiger, which outlines our expectations for all students.
Cell Phone Policy:
At A.G. Wright Middle School, we value instructional time, peer collaboration, and personal growth. Therefore, our cell phone policy is strictly enforced. Students must have their phones turned off and stored in a designated caddy or locked in their lockers from 9:20 AM until 3:50 PM. This policy promotes focused learning and encourages meaningful face-to-face interactions.
Car Pick-Up Procedure: Car Rider Google Form
To permit your tiger/s to depart school property in your car, on their bike, or on foot without being signed out in the front office, click the above link and fill out the form. Once the form is completed, you will be assigned a car rider pick-up number and receive a speedy pick-up pass at Back-to-School Night. Only one form is needed per family. Remember, drop-off is in the front of the school, and pick-up is in the back.
