Life Events

Welcome to the Life Events page, designed to help you navigate changes, additions, or cancellations to your benefits when life events occur. Life events, such as marriage, birth, divorce, death, or changes in employment status, can impact your health and dental benefits, as well as your participation in the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) program.

To ensure you can make necessary adjustments, it's important to notify the Benefits office and complete your ESS life event within 30 days of the qualifying event. These changes, often referred to as status changes or qualifying events, are governed by the Regulations for Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code, which oversee benefit plans.

Some examples of Section 125 status changes or qualifying events include:

  • Loss of health coverage
  • A move that results in loss of eligibility
  • Significant changes in costs, coverage, or new options under your, your spouse’s, or your dependent’s plan
  • Entitlement to or loss of Medicaid
  • Entitlement to Medicare

Understanding and responding to these life events promptly ensures you can make necessary adjustments to your benefits in a timely manner. Please explore the resources available to assist you in managing your benefits during life-changing events. Should you have any questions or need further guidance, our team is here to support you through these transitions.
