Retirement

If you are a twelve-month employees who is retiring mid-year, you will receive your final contract pay on the first of the month after your last workday. If you are a ten-month or eleven-month employee who is retiring mid-year, you will receive your final contract pay on the first of the month after your retirement date. If you complete your contract and retire on the first of the month after your last contracted workday, you will receive your regular checks as outlined below.

• Ten-month employees – final contract pay is August 1.

• Eleven-month employees – final contract pay is August 1.

• Twelve-month employees – final contract pay is July 1.

The Payroll and Benefits Office Retirement Processing Sheet will ask if you would like to have your eligible leave paid out when you retire. If you check yes under section 5 of this form and retire mid-year regardless of contract length, a payout for your unused leave will be made on the next available payroll after your retirement date. If you complete your contract and retire on the first of the month after your last contracted workday, a payout for your unused leave will be made on July 1.

Employees who are enrolled in one of the division's health insurance plans and who have at least five (5) consecutive years of contracted full-time service directly prior to retirement, may choose to drop or enroll in retiree health coverage at the time of their retirement. If the employee is covering a child or spouse at the time of their retirement, they may also enroll these dependents into the retiree health plan. If a retiring employee desires to continue their coverage, they must complete a new health application to be transferred into the Retiree Group plan and a VRS-78 form to have their monthly premium payments withheld from their VRS pension payments. Retirees and their enrolled dependents should receive new health insurance cards with the retiree group plan information.

Employees who are enrolled in one of the division's dental insurance plans directly prior to retirement, may choose to drop or enroll in retiree dental coverage at the time of their retirement. If the employee is covering a child or spouse at the time of their retirement, they may also enroll these dependents into the retiree dental plan. If a retiring employee desires to continue their coverage, they must complete a new dental application to be transferred into the Retiree Group plan and a VRS-78 form to have their monthly premium payments withheld from their VRS pension payments. Retirees and their enrolled dependents should receive new dental insurance cards with the retiree group plan information.

No, the decision to discontinue enrollment is irrevocable. This includes retirees and any dependents that are enrolled in the retiree health plan.

Enrollment into Medicare Part A & Part B is mandatory for all eligible retirees and / or their dependents in order to continue health coverage with the school division. If the retiree and/or dependent has current Medicare A & B coverage, no further action is needed.

If the retiring employee and/or their dependent is eligible but has not enrolled in Medicare A & B (Deferred coverage), then Special Enrollment Period (SEP) forms and an application from the Social Security Administration (SSA) will need to be completed by a member of our benefits team upon request.

Stafford County Public Schools offers a Senior Supplement plan which includes a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) to retirees on Medicare. There is a separate charge from the Social Security Administration for the monthly cost of Medicare Part B. Stafford County Public Schools does not pay any portion of the Medicare Part B cost.
